Duart Castle

Duart Castle, seat of Clan Maclean, dates from the mid 13th Century, it is the first landmark of Mull that you see on the ferry journey from Oban to Craignure. Restored in 1911 by Sir Fitzroy Maclean, it is now a popular destination for holidaymakers and clan members from around the world.  The gathering of the clan takes place every 5 years at their ancestral home.  Just a short car journey takes you from the ferry terminal at Craignure to the castle where you can wander around the grounds or go for a guided tour of the building.  Visit the Duart Castle website.

Torosay Castle

Torosay Castle is a Victorian Mansion House just 1½ miles from Craignure.  As well as the fine interior of the castle, visitors are also able to explore the extensive gardens.  Enjoy the splendour of the Statue Walk, the Water Garden and the Japanese Garden.  Visit Torosay's Website

Instead of driving to Torosay, you can go by train on Mull's narrow gauge railway.  Trains leave from the station at Craignure and travel through Torosay's scenic woodland to the castle.  Visit Mull Rail's website.

Moy Castle

The remains of Moy Castle can be found along the shore from Lochbuie.  It was the stronghold of the MacLaines of Lochbuie, descended from the Macleans of Duart.  The castle and the surrounding area is said to be haunted by the 'headless horseman' Ewen a'Chinn Bhig, son of the Chief of the MacLaines.  A battle between father and son led to Ewen's decapitation, his ghost - on horseback - is said to ride furiously around the castle!

Aros Castle

The remains of Aros Castle, another of Mull's medieval castles, are located at Aros Mains, a couple of miles north of Salen.  It was a stronghold of the Lords of the Isles.
